This expansive aerial photograph captures the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) at the Port of Cape Town, with the terminal stretching across the foreground of Ben Schoeman Dock and Table Mountain providing a dramatic backdrop. Multiple ship-to-shore gantry cranes are positioned along the quay, with container vessels including an APL vessel and a Maersk Line vessel berthed at the terminal. Thousands of shipping containers are arranged across the terminal yard, illustrating the scale of Cape Town’s container-handling operations.
The Cape Town Container Terminal began operations in 1977 and has become a critical logistics gateway for the Western Cape. The terminal handles containerised cargo moving between South Africa and international markets and is particularly important for the export of deciduous fruit, fresh produce and other refrigerated and perishable products. Extensive road and rail connections link the terminal with its inland logistics network.
The terminal has undergone major infrastructure investment, including the deepening of the Ben Schoeman container berths to 15.5 metres, quay extensions and the installation of modern ship-to-shore gantry cranes. These improvements were designed to accommodate larger vessels and increase container-handling capacity. The photograph also illustrates the close relationship between the port’s industrial infrastructure and Cape Town’s dense urban landscape, with the city and Table Mountain immediately beyond the harbour.
