The Bosjes Chapel is one of South Africa’s most celebrated examples of contemporary architecture, located on the picturesque Bosjes Estate in the Breede Valley near Worcester. Completed in 2016, the chapel has received international acclaim for its sculptural form, inspired by the surrounding Cape Fold Mountains and the flowing lines of Psalm 36:7: “Under the shadow of Your wings you will find refuge.” Its sweeping white concrete roof appears to float effortlessly above transparent glass walls, creating a striking balance between architecture, landscape and spirituality.
Designed by Coetzee Steyn of Steyn Studio in collaboration with TV3 Architects, the chapel combines innovative engineering with timeless simplicity. The glazed façades dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing uninterrupted views of the surrounding vineyards, mountains and indigenous gardens. A series of reflecting pools surrounding the chapel enhances the illusion that the building is floating, while also mirroring its dramatic curves. Bosjes Chapel has become an internationally recognised architectural landmark, attracting visitors, photographers and design enthusiasts from around the world.
