Houghton Golf Club is located in Houghton Estate, north-east of the Johannesburg city centre, in an area surrounded by established suburbs including Parktown, Killarney, Rosebank and Orange Grove. The club’s history extends back to the early twentieth century, with the Houghton Estate Golf Club established in the late 1910s before the club relocated and developed the course associated with its present identity. The original course design dates from 1926 and was created by A.M. Copland, the club’s first professional. Copland laid out the course across a heavily treed and undulating tract of land, establishing the parkland character that remains fundamental to Houghton’s identity. The club has subsequently become one of Johannesburg’s most prominent championship golf venues, hosting eight South African Open championships, with the first taking place in 1951.
The modern Houghton Golf Club represents a substantial redevelopment of the historic course. In 2007, the club embarked on a major transformation involving the complete redesign of the golf course and redevelopment of part of the property. The Jack Nicklaus Design Group was appointed to create the new layout, replacing the older course while retaining the site’s established parkland character. The redesigned course opened for play in 2010 and was officially opened by Jack Nicklaus in 2011. The new design introduced strategically positioned bunkers, contoured greens, water features and revised playing lines intended to provide a more challenging modern championship course without relying solely on length. Nicklaus Design describes elevation as an important component of the course strategy, while the club itself highlights the combination of strategically positioned bunkers, rolling greens and subtle slopes.
The aerial perspective reveals many of the characteristics that define the current course. Broad fairways wind through mature vegetation, with numerous sand bunkers, ponds and water features integrated into the landscape. The course’s parkland setting creates a substantial green island within an otherwise highly developed metropolitan environment. The mature trees are particularly important to the visual character of Houghton, providing separation between individual holes and establishing a strong sense of landscape continuity. The club’s own description notes that the property is adjacent to the greenbelt of The Wilds and functions as a proclaimed bird sanctuary, supporting a variety of birdlife and waterfowl.
The modern clubhouse occupies a prominent position within the golf course and forms the centre of the contemporary facility. Designed by Boogertman and Partners, the clubhouse incorporates basement parking, kitchens, restaurants, bars, changing facilities, conference areas and other hospitality spaces. Its elevated position provides extensive views across the course and surrounding Johannesburg landscape.
